Weekend Roundup: Carlow & Bohermeen 31/03/2009
Des Hanlon Classic, Carlow
Report Courtesy of Sinead Power
Sunday last saw a smaller contingency from Comeragh CC travel to Carlow for the prestigious Des Hanlon Cycle race. Finbar Power our sole rider in the the 2nd race(2 laps) and Robin Kelly, Keith Gater, Don Feighery and Mark Nugent were just four of the 93 riders which lined out for the main race(3 laps). The Des Hanlon is a tough race which by the end of the first lap sorts the men from the boys and this year was no different.
From the beginning of the race Comeragh cc’s Robin Kelly made many attempts to jump from the main field but every attempt was covered and brought back, Robin was unlucky at the bottom of the first climb when a rider infront of him got into difficulty causing Robin to stall, loose his footing and almost ending up in the ditch, he lost contact with the main field, pushing himself to the max he almost got onto the back of field but with a small group attempting to go off the front the speed in the peleton increased and he was unfortunate not to regain contact. With the speed now up coming off the decent going into the 2nd lap a lot of riders were losing contact with the main field, Don Feighery was unfortunate to be one of these, although he fought hard to get back on it was to no avail and used the remaining miles to get in some training for the up and
coming FBD Insurance Ras. Best of Comeragh cc were keith Gater and Mark Nugent who played their part in pursuing the breakaway group but had to be content in finishing in the main field at the finish line.
Comeragh cc would like to congratulate Brian Keneally on a great win.
Next week see’s club members travel to Fermoy in preparation for the easter weekend where Comeragh cc will have a team of 7 participate in the Gorey 3 day and 5 members participate in the 4 Day Ras Muhan, wishing them the best of luck.
Waller Cup, Bohermeen
Conor McGrath and David Butler made the trip to Bohermeen near Navan for the annual Waller Cup. This race was run off on a handicap system with the senior A riders starting off 2 min behind the senior B rider group which contained both Conor & David. Half way through the first lap of 6, a breakaway group formed at the head of the race containing someone of the more experienced riders and race favourites, Conor spotted this could be the move of the day and quickly crossed the gap to this group. This decision proved correct as this group of 8 held of the chasing group containing the A riders, and sprinted for glory. Conor finished 6th in the sprint for the line while David finished strongly in the chasing pack.
Many thanks to those who sent in reports.
