Dunboyne 10/03/2009
Robin Kelly and Conor McGrath made the trip to Dunboyne Co. Meath on a wet Saturday morning last to test themselves against the best in the country in what was a very well attended event. Robin was active early on (when is he not?) getting away in a break with Philip Lavery. Eventually that move drifted back and another break went away, Robin missed the boat this time but as you can see in the picture above, he didn't take it lying down !
Conor was having a superb race also, bridging across to Robins group at one point in a move similar to his by now legendary crossover to the break on day 1 of last years Gorey (is there a better B rider in the country for bridging gaps, I think not). They never made it back to the breakaway, but Robin did take the bunch sprint for 9th place whilst Conor finished very shortly thereafter in around 15th position.
The guys didn't get into the right breaks this weekend, but they showed that they are very strong and a match for the best. Comeragh CC will need to clear out some room in its trophy cabinet for 2009 ! In the meantime one of our training partners for the winter, Philip Lavery took a well deserved win. Well done Philip.
Many thanks to Marian Lamb of cycling Ulster for permission to use the superb pictures (higher quality versions on the way Robin and Conor, you will be glad to hear - Robin I think you will scarcely have a better picture taken of you on a bike ever again - how do you beat that one ?). I don't think Graham Watson could do better. Thanks also to Martin Gill of Wexford for the picture on the frontpage.
