Comeragh Cycling Club Notes
Mick Cahill Memorial
Sunday last, March 11, saw a large contingent of Comeragh riders travel to Banteer, Co. Cork, to contest the annual Mick Cahill Memorial Race. Conor McGrath, Tom Fanning, Don Feighery, Robin Kelly, David Butler, Martin O’Brien, Ian Cantwell and Eoin O’Shea all rode well in a race that was tough from the word go. Not having the Spring weather we were hoping for, the riders had to contend with wet, miserable conditions. Don Feighery & Martin O’Brien were unlucky to puncture early in the race but worked hard to get back on to finish. Ian Cantwell and Eoin O’Shea both finished well in the C section of the event. Conor McGrath proved his form is improving rapidly when he rode an excellent race to finish a creditable 7th overall in the Senior 1-2 event. We’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Conor on his previous week’s performance in Navan where he finished 12th overall to win the Senior 2 race at the annual Cycleways Cup. Well done to all concerned. Keep up the good work and best of luck over the coming weeks.
Racing Next Week
Next weekend will be a busy one for Comeragh with racing on Saturday 17th, Sunday 18th & Monday 19th. Carrick-on-Suir is the venue for the popular Carraig Challenge Cup on St. Patrick’s Day with the national league Des O’Hanlon Memorial in Carlow the following day. We will travel to Limerick on Monday to conclude the weekend. Riders have been working hard throughout the winter and continue to do so in preparation for the forthcoming FBD Insurance RAS. We will name Comeragh’s Ras team after Monday’s race.
Fundraising
All members please note that ALL sponsorship monies and advertising for our fundraising Race Night MUST BE in by this Friday, March 16, as we need to have the Race Night catalogue printed.
Ciaran Power
Our pro rider, Ciaran Power, lined out with his Navigators Team for the 2.1 world ranked Driedaagse Van West-Vlaanderen 3 day which was held in Belgium over last weekend. With no road races in his legs prior to the event, Ciaran had an excellent weekend and was pleased with his performance. He was prominent throughout the event. Friday’s stage saw him away in a break of 22, finishing the day in Group 2, 5 minutes ahead of the bunch. He had another excellent ride on Saturday, going on a lone break for a lap and a half of a difficult & dangerous circuit before being caught just 1km from the finish line. Sunday saw another good performance, again he was involved in a number of breakaway attempts, finally finishing in the main bunch. We wish him continued success.
