WEEKEND RACING (By Tommy Fanning)

The Fast and the Furious, that’s the only way I can describe yesterdays race hosted by Edge CC. Some great racing was had by all and yet again Comeraghcc was in the thick of the action from the gun. The course itself is hard, up and down, high speed descents, with short steep ascending twisty roads. Many had started but only few finished the course.

Straight down to business we must congratulate Karol Stafford for an excellent 2nd place in the A4 category. Great ride keep up the training, a man to watch for the coming season. Well done to Emanon Ryan also for completing the course, Eamon tried to snap the elastic but unfortunately he was to strong for some of the other riders in his group and they would not ride with him. I think that’s all we had competing in the A4 Cat.

A3’s up next 4 laps of a 10 mile course. Comeragh had Shane OD, Finbar P, Butzy and Aubrey S. This race stayed together but the speed of the first lap left a lot of riders out the back and nowhere to go. Our recently upgraded wining machine Shane OD was on form again and despite a very undulating course managed to sprint out of the bunch to take 2nd…unfortunately nobody told Shane there was another rider up the road. Congrats Shane and to all the other riders who took part

Next up A1/2’s, 6 laps. Martin, The Two T’s (TF and TL) and Keith G. This was Timmy Barry homeland and you could see he wanted this badly, so the Edge Cycling Team were out in full force. Race started at 13:00hrs. Avg speed 30mph. Time 13:01. Even the Stig would of found it hard to hold the corners. Keith was to blame for this tremendous acceleration from the Gun. He was quickly followed by 3 riders from Edge and Paidi O’Brien. Keith broke a spoke and lost momentum. The others surged on and opened up a gap of about aprox 1 min for the first 3 laps. The race was on behind, every other team was forcing the pace to bridge the gap, Comeragh, Carrick and Dungarvan where amongst the teams pushing the pace. Hats off to the remaining Edge riders in the chasing group, they chased down every dangerous move. With 3 laps down the leaders had a commanding 3 min gap. The race continued behind however riders legs where popping after each consecutive lap, unfortunately mine popped at the end of Lap 4 but I managed to hang on. Both Keith and Martin made a decisive move and got into a small break of about 7 – 8 riders. On lap 5 my head gasket blew. Timmy B, Micheal Fitz and Sean Lacey from EdgeCC just needed to out fox Paidi and they didn’t fail. With about 150m to the line Paidi looked tired, they must of done him over on the last lap. Timmy accelerated past him with ease to win, both sean and Micheal finished just 10 sec behind. A great ride was had by Eddie Barry of Blarney, he came in a credible 5th . The remaining riders, a handful sprinted it out for 6th place. Both Keith and Martin where amongst the group. Keith got 7th. Hats of to Hardman Martin for an “epic” ride.

Can I ask all members, if I am not away at races that some rider from each category ring/text/email me details of rider participation, results and a race report by the following Monday morning at 11.00am, I need to email in our notes for the newspaper by 11.00 on the Monday. Your other clubmates are interested in how you got on!!

TANDEM PILOTS CONFIRMED

We are glad to announce that Dermot Blount and Barry Griffin will be taking on the challenge of tandem pilots this year. Dermot will once again pilot Damien in the 160k and Barry has kindly offered to pilot Catriona also in the 160k. On behalf of the committee I would like to thank both members for offering their services and bringing much joy to two visually impaired cyclists.
